In July 2013, I attended the Midwest Writer’s Workshop in Muncie, Indiana. There’s not much to do in Muncie, but I did find some good restaurants. The workshop was excellent, with interesting speakers and some high-quality attendees. My favorite workshop was with Barbara Shoup on historical fiction. No pitch session for me this time, but I will do that next time.. I also enjoyed hearing Jane Friedman and I loved getting an autograph from D.E. Johnson, writer of a new historical mystery series about Detroit in the early days of autos. The first in the series is the Detroit Electric Scheme.
From June through August, I took an online course from Writer’s Digest, A First Draft in 12 weeks. It was perfect timing for me, because I wanted to get the draft out of my head and on paper before I headed for a long trip in early September I didn’t do all the exercises, but I did submit at least 2000 pages each week. The instructor was helpful and encouraging and he didn’t tell me I was a terrible writer, which I appreciated.
In January 2014 I am attending Writers in Paradise, the Writer’s Conference at Eckerd College, St. Petersburg, Florida.
